Dental Crown (Caps) in Springfield & Longmeadow, MA Crowns Springfield

What is a  Dental Crown?

Dental Crowns also called caps, fit snugly over teeth to mask chips, broken teeth, misalignment, stains, and other imperfections. Crowns can immediately enhance your smile by brightening your teeth and making them much stronger.

Dr. David Peck of Springfield, MA describes the anatomy of the tooth to give us a better understanding of what dental crowns are.  The crown is the part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth.  It is the area above the gum line.  Installing dental crowns is like putting a tooth-shaped cap on your tooth to cover it and improve its appearance and increase its strength and durability.  A crown is “gum-less” and is fixed to fully or partially cover the visible portion of the tooth depending on what you need.

What are the benefits of getting a dental crown?

Tooth Filling Springfield & Longmeadow, MA | Dental CrownsThe use of dental crowns is recommended for a number of dental issues to restore your beautiful smile and give you back your confidence. If a patient has:

  • Discolored teeth or any teeth irregularities, crowns are a good option for cosmetic purposes.
  • Damaged, cracked, or fractured tooth due to tooth decay, trauma, large fillings, or root canal therapy, crowns are also recommended to preserve the tooth and restore regular function.
  • Crowns can also support the replacement of a tooth in a bridge and can cover a dental implant.

Crowns are a good alternative if you prefer plate-less dentures. Patients with top dentures often complain about constant gag reflex or those having frustrations about not being able to taste their food because of the acrylic plate on top dentures and of course, there are those who suffer the embarrassment of falling dentures because they do not fit properly. Crowns would be an option that these patients should also look into since they are fixed and do not have the acrylic dental material.

Dental crowns are also an option if you are looking to get wireless partials. Wireless partials use a special flexible material instead of the traditional acrylic plate, which eliminates the need to have the dentures anchored into the teeth with the use of wires. Wireless partials are attached to the teeth, much like a mouth guard, and are designed to stay in place. Crowns are able to provide the same function and are considered a better option because they eliminate the need for the acrylic plate.

What is the Dental Crown procedure like?

Laser Dentistry Springfield MA | Dental CrownsDuring the first visit, the dentist numbs the area and makes the necessary steps in order to properly lay the groundwork for the dental crown. An impression of the tooth is made and pictures of the tooth are taken to make sure that the dental technician will make the right color match. A temporary crown is installed for the patient to use until the permanent crown is ready. Once the permanent crown is available, the dentist will call you in for another visit.  Your dentist will then make sure that the crown is a perfect fit and will make adjustments if needed. Your dentist cements the crown permanently and follow-up check-ups will be scheduled to check on the crown condition.
