What is general dentistry?
Our team describes general dentistry as treatments that are used to achieve better oral health. They may include some of the following services which are readily available in our office:
• Examinations – patients are encouraged by the American Dental Association to visit the dentist at least every six months. During these recall visits, the dentist has a chance to examine the smile and look for signs of problems such as periodontal disease or tooth decay. These examinations may also include x-rays to check the health of the teeth, gums, and bone where the naked eye cannot see. With early detection of problems, patients can greatly improve their chances of restoring the smile afterwards.
• Cleanings – every time patients visit the practice, our dental hygienists will offer a thorough dental cleaning. This cleaning includes the teeth and gums and can get to those hard-to-reach places that many patients are unable to effectively clean. This increases the chance of keeping tooth decay and periodontal disease at bay.
• Fillings – if an area of tooth decay has been spotted, our professionals will provide immediate treatment with dental fillings. Dental fillings are comprised of composite resin bonding that mimics the appearance of natural tooth enamel when placed in areas where decay has occurred. This ensures seamless integration with the natural smile to avoid the appearance of dental work.
• Periodontal therapy – patients who have developed periodontal disease, or “gum disease,” will require additional treatments to address the infection. This may include scaling and root planing, antibiotics, and other treatments to reverse the problem and bring the smile back to its original health. Once periodontal disease develops, it cannot be cured—only controlled—with the help of a dental professional.
