Tackling the Sensitivity Subject

General Dentistry Springfield, MassachusettsOral care may be a sensitive subject for some folks. We all like to think that we are doing a good job at taking care of our teeth and gums. Advice or feedback, even from a dentist, may cause a bit of stress. We approach prevention with compassion and good intentions. Our training and experience are used to help patients enjoy all the benefits of good oral health. You may not initial think of a healthy mouth as an aspect of a quality life, but it is. Sensitivity is a relatively minor dental problem that can distract you and keep you from enjoying your favorite foods.

Tooth sensitivity is not an age-related problem, and it is not simply “the way it is” for some people. When teeth are sensitive, there is an underlying reason. Also, there are a few different ways to resolve sensitivity so normal chewing function – and quality of life – may be reinstated.

Treatment Options to Reduce-Sensitivity

There is no single path to treating sensitivity that is ideal in every scenario. To determine which protocol may be most appropriate, we perform a thorough exam of teeth and gums. Understanding of the cause enables us to act in the most efficient manner. Some of the options that we may consider include:

  • Periodontal care. Above the gum line, strong enamel protects the inner structures of each tooth. Below the gum line, there is a layer of cementum that covers the root. If bacteria have invaded the gums and created pockets of inflammation, the cementum may be wearing away, exposing sensitive root material. A deep cleaning also called scaling and root planing, can remove bacteria, resolve inflammation, and restore comfort.
  • Porcelain veneers. Usually, we use veneers to add aesthetic value to the smile. However, we may also consider how an additional layer of material over the natural surface might improve resilience against hot and cold temperatures. Veneers may be a good option for reducing sensitivity in front teeth.
  • Dental crowns. A dental crown is a replica of a natural tooth that is affixed to the structure to fortify strength. Crowns are typically used when a tooth has been damaged or has been treated with root canal therapy. If sensitivity stems from the erosion of tooth enamel, a crown may be an effective solution to resolve the issue.
