A major concern you may have as you age is your teeth. It\u2019s comforting to know that teeth are resilient and if you take care of them, they will last you for life. But your teeth work hard and years of everyday chomping and chewing eventually add up.<\/p>\n

What are some of the things that affect your teeth?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Periodontal<\/a>Periodontal Disease<\/a> (Gum Disease)<\/strong>
\nJust another thing that Father Time affects is the risks of gum disease. Periodontal disease is harmful to the health of your teeth – and your health, generally. Small pockets form at the gum line where bacteria grows, and if left untreated, infection can set in, causing damage to bone and connective tissue – and eventually tooth loss. Follow these tips:
\n\u2022 Get a dental check-up twice a year
\n\u2022 Use an antibacterial, non-alcohol mouthwash
\n\u2022 Brush and floss twice a day<\/p>\n

Cavities<\/strong>
\nTwo of the biggest threats to your teeth are the carbohydrates sugar and starch. They ferment in your mouth which causes bacteria to produce acids, which eat away at the enamel of your teeth. Pitting of the enamel results and tooth decay finds those pits and causes cavities. Follow these tips:
\n\u2022 Limit carbonated soft drinks, sports drinks and sugary foods
\n\u2022 Avoid frequent snacking
\n\u2022 Chew sugarless gum to curb your sweet tooth<\/p>\n

Daily Wear and Tear<\/strong>
\nThe function of your teeth is mechanical\u2026to chew and grind food to make it digestible. Your teeth are resistant to cracking, breaking and chipping; they do not become more brittle with age. When a patient comes to our office with chips and cracks in their teeth, the reason is usually from biting down on something hard like an olive pit or a kernel of un-popped corn.
\nAnother culprit is teeth grinding (Bruxism) which can be caused by stress. Follow these tips:
\n\u2022 Ask your dentist to check for bruxism
\n\u2022 Watch out for olive pits and popcorn kernels
\n\u2022 Avoid chewing ice<\/p>\n
